Tech Desk — March 31, 2025:
WhatsApp is introducing a new feature that will allow users to share motion pictures in chats and channels, a feature that has been available for Android phones and is now being expanded to WhatsApp. This feature enables users to send motion pictures as animated videos rather than as static images, bringing a more dynamic and interactive experience to the platform.
What Are Motion Pictures?
A motion picture is a type of photo that captures a few seconds of video and audio along with a still image when the camera shutter is pressed. This feature is known as “Top Shot” on Google Pixel phones and “Live Photo” on iPhones. With this new WhatsApp update, users will be able to send motion pictures as videos, which will play as animated content on the recipient's phone, enhancing how these photos are shared and viewed.
How It Works
Currently, WhatsApp converts motion photos into still images, but with the new update, users will be able to share them as animated videos. This feature is being tested in Android Beta version 2.25.8.12, and users who are part of the beta program will be the first to access this functionality. The motion photos, once shared, will be automatically saved to the gallery, making it easier for users to store and manage them.
Moreover, users will find motion photos alongside JPG and PNG files in WhatsApp's media sharing options. This new addition is expected to make sharing more dynamic and interactive, as users can now send and view motion photos in their original, animated form.
When Will It Be Available?
While the feature is currently being tested, it remains to be seen when it will be fully rolled out to all users. Those in the beta program can already begin using the feature, and once available to the public, it will add a fun, engaging way to share photos with friends and family.
As WhatsApp continues to update its features and improve the user experience, the ability to share motion pictures as videos marks another step toward enhancing how we communicate and share memories on the platform.
