AUCKLAND, New Zealand – April 10, 2025:
Air New Zealand has unveiled its highly anticipated new uniform, a striking collection designed by the internationally acclaimed Emilia Wickstead in collaboration with tā moko artist Te Rangitu Netana. This bold and culturally rich uniform celebrates Aotearoa (New Zealand) and its unique heritage, setting a new standard for airline apparel.
The collection, which will be worn by 6,000 Air New Zealand employees worldwide, features bespoke hand-painted prints that reflect the traditions and values of Māori culture. Key pieces include "The Fine Print – Dress," adorned with intricate kōwhai prints, and "The Collective Thread – Shirt," featuring purapura whetū patterns, designed for versatility among cabin crew and ground staff. The uniform also introduces the Ie Faitaga, to be trialed by Pasifika team members, and a pinstripe pilot suit with a kiwi feather lining, symbolizing leadership and prestige.
"For us, this is more than just a uniform. It is a celebration of our people, our culture, and our values," said Air New Zealand Chief Executive Greg Foran. "Our new uniform encapsulates everything we stand for – a combination of innovation, rich cultural heritage, and a deep sense of pride and belonging."
Emilia Wickstead described the project as a deeply personal endeavor, emphasizing her respect for New Zealand's heritage and the importance of creating a uniform that tells a meaningful story about Aotearoa. "I wanted to create a uniform that empowers individuals and inspires pride in all who wear it and see it," she stated.
Te Rangitu Netana highlighted the cultural significance of the prints, explaining, "Each print is a story, deeply rooted in the traditions and values of Aotearoa. As a Māori artist on the world stage, I feel a deep responsibility in ensuring our culture is represented in a way that is authentic and meaningful."
The uniform will undergo onboard wearer trials starting in May 2025, with a full network rollout planned for 2026. This launch marks a new era for Air New Zealand, blending contemporary fashion with the rich cultural heritage of Aotearoa.
