DHAKA, Bangladesh – April 17, 2025:
East West University (EWU) marked a major academic milestone with its 24th Convocation held on April 16, 2025, at the Aftabnagar Sports Ground in Dhaka. A total of 2,885 students from undergraduate and graduate programs received their degrees, while six outstanding scholars were awarded gold medals in recognition of their academic excellence.
Presiding over the ceremony as the representative of the President of Bangladesh, Education Adviser Professor Dr. Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar called on the new graduates to use their education to promote peace, justice, and tolerance in a world increasingly challenged by intolerance, ultranationalism, and narrow thinking. “Advanced technologies have opened doors,” Dr. Abrar noted, “but we must also confront the barriers that divide us.”
The convocation address was delivered by Syed Nasim Manzur, Managing Director of Apex Footwear Ltd., who inspired graduates to move beyond job-seeking and explore entrepreneurship. Citing China's economic transformation, he emphasized the potential of small businesses to drive Bangladesh's GDP. “Understand every stage of business before starting one,” he advised, “or risk costly failure.”
Professor Dr. S. M. A. Faiz, Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), attended as a special guest. He emphasized the UGC’s reformed approach to ensuring a more effective educational ecosystem and urged the graduates to balance career ambitions with family responsibilities.
Founder Vice Chancellor and Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, Professor Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, urged the formation of a National Education Commission and the development of an up-to-date education policy. He challenged the youth to use the nation’s resources wisely and reduce dependence on imports.
Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Shams Rahman encouraged the graduates to harness creativity, digital literacy, and communication skills to turn Bangladesh’s large population into a productive force. “You must go beyond convention,” he said, “and create the future with your innovation.”
The ceremony was attended by Dr. Khalilur Rahman, National Security Adviser, along with vice chancellors of other universities, cultural icons, board members, faculty, staff, and proud family members. Graduates expressed deep satisfaction at completing their studies on schedule, celebrating both their academic success and the university’s commitment to quality education.
