HKBU Wins Nine Awards at Geneva Inventions

HKBU scholars win big at Geneva Inventions Exhibition, securing nine awards for innovative research projects ranging from medicine to green technology.

HONG KONG – April 13, 2025:

Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) scholars have achieved remarkable success at the 50th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva, securing a total of nine prestigious awards, including two Gold Medals with Congratulations of the Jury, three Gold Medals, three Silver Medals, and one Bronze Medal. These awards highlight the university's commitment to cutting-edge, innovative, and transdisciplinary research.

The award-winning HKBU research projects spanned a wide range of fields, demonstrating the university's dedication to translating research outcomes into practical applications for the benefit of society. Notably, Professor Bian Zhaoxiang and Professor Tan Hor-yue received a Gold Medal with Congratulations of the Jury for their novel herbal formulation (CDD-2103) for ulcerative colitis, which has already been authorized for clinical trials. Professor Liao Pan also received a Gold Medal with Congratulations of the Jury for a cost-effective and environmentally friendly method to produce a monoterpenoid used in the perfume and fragrance industry.

Other Gold Medal winners included Professor Zhao Jun for an advanced catalytic system that converts biomass waste into green hydrogen, Professor Jill Chiu and Dr. Jenny Ng for broad absorption spectrum sunscreen compounds, and Professor Matthew Lui for producing chitin using a green and recyclable ionic liquid.

Silver Medals were awarded to Professor Bian Zhaoxiang and Professor Zhai Lixiang for a novel Chinese medicine formulation (CDD-2101) for constipation, Professor Anna Qin for a water misting system enhancing bathing for wheelchair users, and Professor Wan Renjie for an IP protection solution for 3D assets, "Guardian3D."

Professor Bian Zhaoxiang and Dr. Lin Chengyuan received a Bronze Medal for a botanical remedy (CDD-2107) for the rare disease myofibrillar myopathy.

HKBU's success at the International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva underscores the university's dedication to translating research outcomes into practical applications that benefit society. The exhibition, a global event dedicated to inventions, featured 1,050 inventions from over 40 countries, highlighting the global impact of HKBU's research.
