New York, USA — April 6, 2025:
Meta Platforms has unveiled the latest evolution of its large language model, Llama 4, introducing two new variants—Llama 4 Scout and Llama 4 Maverick—positioning them as the company’s most advanced and capable models to date. According to a company statement on Saturday, both models are open-source and optimized for multimodal functions, allowing them to process and generate content across text, images, audio, and video.
Meta described Llama 4 Scout and Maverick as “best in their class for multimodality,” and emphasized their importance in the future of AI development. The tech giant also previewed Llama 4 Behemoth, a powerful research-grade model described as “one of the smartest LLMs in the world,” built to serve as a guiding architecture for future innovations.
The announcement comes amid an escalating race among major technology firms to dominate the AI sector, following the disruptive success of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Meta’s aggressive investment in AI—reportedly up to $65 billion this year—is part of a broader strategy to enhance its AI infrastructure and close the gap with competitors.
Despite the ambitious rollout, internal challenges reportedly delayed the public release of Llama 4. According to The Information, the model struggled with key technical benchmarks during development, particularly in logical reasoning and mathematics. Meta was also reportedly concerned about the model’s relatively weaker performance in generating human-like voice interactions compared to rival systems.
Nevertheless, the company insists that Llama 4 Scout and Maverick mark a significant leap forward in AI capabilities and accessibility, particularly given their open-source availability.
With this launch, Meta aims not only to strengthen its role in the AI space but also to shape the ecosystem around open, powerful, and flexible language models.
