DHAKA, Bangladesh – April 29, 2025:

Chinese technology behemoth Tencent has formally expressed its interest in expanding operations into Bangladesh, marking a significant development in the country’s growing digital economy. The announcement follows an official meeting between Tencent representatives and Bangladeshi authorities, where the company outlined its interest in entering the South Asian market.

Faiz Taiyeb Ahmad, special assistant to Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, disclosed the development in a social media post on Monday. He confirmed that the meeting had taken place and emphasized the Bangladeshi government’s commitment to welcoming top-tier global tech companies.

“US giant Starlink has already come to Bangladesh. Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus officially approved the license for Starlink on Monday,” Ahmad said. “The journey of big technology companies started in Bangladesh at the hands of Dr. Yunus. More companies will come in the future in such a way.”

He added, “Today we sat in a meeting with Tencent officially. They expressed their keen interest to come in Bangladesh. We have assured them of providing policy support within a short time.”

Founded in 1998, Tencent Holdings Ltd. is one of the world’s most valuable and highest-grossing tech conglomerates. Headquartered in China, it delivers a wide range of internet-based services and products, including AI solutions, entertainment platforms, and cloud infrastructure. The company is also the global leader in the video game industry by equity investment.

Tencent's potential entry follows a wave of increased foreign interest in Bangladesh’s rapidly growing digital ecosystem. With the recent approval of Starlink’s operations in the country, led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the groundwork has been laid for broader collaboration with global tech innovators.

This momentum positions Bangladesh as a rising tech hub in South Asia, with the government actively pursuing strategic partnerships and offering policy incentives to attract foreign investment.

The move signals a transformative moment for the nation's digital economy, boosting hopes for increased innovation, infrastructure development, and global connectivity.
