DUBAI, UAE — April 17, 2025:

The United Arab Emirates is preparing to eliminate the use of physical Emirates ID cards by launching a nationwide digital identity system powered by facial recognition and biometric authentication. The initiative is expected to go live within the next year and is part of the government’s ongoing push to modernize services and improve access through secure, digital-first solutions, reads a Khaleej Times post.
Led by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP), the system will allow residents and citizens to verify their identity digitally via the UAEPASS app. This transition aims to streamline identity verification processes across essential sectors including banking, healthcare, hospitality, and telecommunications.
The announcement was made during a recent session of the Federal National Council (FNC), where member Adnan Al Hammadi highlighted the continued inconvenience caused by requiring physical ID cards. He noted that residents still face barriers in accessing healthcare, banking services, and hotel accommodations without their original Emirates ID, despite major investments in the UAE’s digital infrastructure.
“There is an urgent need for fast, effective solutions to streamline identity verification in these essential sectors,” Al Hammadi said.
Minister of State for Federal National Council Affairs, Abdul Rahman Al Owais, responded on behalf of the ICP, stating that the e-Emirates ID is already active across many services. He confirmed that the authority is prioritizing its expansion in key areas highlighted by the FNC and is accelerating the full-scale rollout of the digital system.
The ICP initially introduced facial recognition functionality at GITEX 2021 through the UAEPASS platform, which now serves as the UAE’s secure digital identity for both citizens and residents. Through UAEPASS and the ICP UAE app, users can access a digital version of their Emirates ID and other government documents, stored securely on their mobile devices.
While the digital transition presents challenges, including secure identity verification across platforms, the ICP said it is working with partners to implement advanced biometric solutions and ensure sector-wide adoption. The authority also emphasized its commitment to data protection laws, privacy standards, and building public trust in smart services.
As the UAE leads the region in government digitization, the move to a biometric-based identity system is expected to eliminate paperwork, reduce fraud, and offer residents a more seamless, contactless experience across both government and private sector services.
