CAPE CANAVERAL, USA – April 29, 2025:
United Launch Alliance (ULA) successfully launched Amazon's first operational Kuiper satellites on April 28, marking the beginning of full-scale deployment for the tech giant’s global broadband initiative, Project Kuiper. The mission lifted off at 7:01 p.m. EDT aboard an Atlas V rocket from Space Launch Complex-41 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.
The Kuiper-1 mission represents a major milestone in Amazon's effort to deliver fast, reliable internet to underserved and remote communities around the world. With plans to deploy more than 3,200 satellites into low-Earth orbit (LEO), Project Kuiper is set to revolutionize broadband access on a global scale.
"This launch is an incredible milestone in Amazon's ambitious initiative," said Gary Wentz, ULA vice president of Government and Commercial Programs. "We’ve worked closely with the Project Kuiper team and are proud to contribute to a mission that aims to improve global connectivity."
Amazon’s Kuiper system previously tested two Kuipersat prototypes in 2023. Now, with the success of Kuiper-1 and the introduction of a multi-launch strategy, the project enters a high-cadence operational phase. In addition to several Atlas V missions, ULA will utilize its next-generation Vulcan rocket for 38 future launches, enabling rapid deployment of the constellation.
Tory Bruno, ULA president and CEO, noted the infrastructure enhancements at Cape Canaveral designed to support simultaneous integration of multiple launch missions. "This is just the beginning. Our evolving capabilities will not only serve Amazon but strengthen our position for commercial and national security customers alike," he said.
ULA, a trusted name in national security space missions for over two decades, continues to push the boundaries of orbital delivery with the Vulcan rocket—an advanced, modular system engineered for flexibility across commercial, scientific, and defense applications.
With the successful launch of Kuiper-1, Amazon and ULA have taken a crucial step toward transforming global internet access and reinforcing America’s leadership in the fast-evolving space technology sector.
